Cefn Coed Youth

New Tredegar Youth   7          Cefn Coed Youth         50

Cefn Coed Youth RFC travelled to New Tredegar with a large squad and produced their best performance of the season, they controlled much of the territory and possession for long periods of time constructing their biggest score of the season.

Cefn Coed opened the scoring after just two minutes with a powerful run from Daniel Wickens and this was followed by a team try with the ball passing through at least 8 pairs of hands before being touched down by Kane Evans who ran the last 30 metre beating two defenders on his way to the line. Next came two forward tries through Perry Lander and Chris Channon with Cefn now showing their forward dominance, James Regan added two conversions which left the half time score standing at 7 - 24 after New Tredegar had scored a try of their own minutes before the half-time whistle.

The second half started much the same as the first had ended with Cefn Coed in total control scoring a further four tries, Kane Evans added another try to his impressive season tally when he ran clear to ground the ball for the score, this was followed by two excellent tries from Matthew Costigan as he crashed through the defensive line on both occasions to run in from the half way line for his tries. James Regan added three more conversions, one of which was a superb drop-kick attempt from the touchline. The scoring was rounded off by Josh O'Sullivan who came off the back of a scrum 10 metres from the opponents try line and crashed over for a superbly taken final try.

Special mention must go to Men of the Match Liam Jones and Nathan Driscoll who both had excellent contributions to a superb display for Cefn Coed Youth RFC.

Cefn Coed Youth  14   Hirwaun Youth  3

Playing their first game for over a month Cefn Coed Youth looked rusty and disjointed for the first 20 minutes, producing lots of errors and allowing a few opportunities to slip through their fingers but through pure hard work Cefn managed to play their way into the game as the minutes ticked by in the first half. There were good breaks from Kane Evans, Matthew Costigan and Thomas Bunt who all came close to scoring but that last pass just failed to stick or go to ground at the critical moment. With all the pressure now coming from Cefn Coed Youth it was only going to be a matter of time before the deadlock was broken and that score finally came from Drew Evans who cut in on a great angle from a switch move which allowed him the crash in next to the posts for the try, Fly half James Regan stepped forward to slot over the conversion for Cefn to take the lead.

The second half started much the same as the first had finished with Cefn Coed Youth making the breaks and with  Hirwaun Youth producing a fine defensive display to keep the home side at bay. Hirwaun finally broke away to their oppositions twenty two only for Cefn to concede a penalty which allow the Hirwaun  Fly half to add three points to take the scores to 7 - 3 with 20 minutes remaining.

Cefn were now looking the most likely to make the next score coming close through Jay Segerson, Chris Channon and Liam Crawley but with quick thinking it was Daniel Wickens who crossed the line by taking a quick tap penalty ten metres out, smashing through the defensive line and grounding the ball for the score. James Regan again stepped up to convert the try to leave the score standing at 14 - 3 with 10 minutes to go but Cefn still had time to maul their visitors thirty metres down the field and over the try line only for the referee to award a 5 metre scrum as he could not see the grounding of the ball.

Cefn Coed Youth    5    Rhymney Youth 3

This was a fantastic game played in great spirit between two very evenly matched teams in poor playing conditions, with continuous drizzle and the pitch being heavy underfoot the standard of rugby was very high. Cefn Coed started the game well playing up the slope in the first half but still looking to penetrate the Rhymney defence at every opportunity trying to spread the ball along the backline even though the ball was like a bar of soap. With the weather conditions making handling difficult the game became a little scrappy just before half-time and a with a poor tackle from a Rhymney Flanker the referee decided that it was time to go to his pocket showing the player a yellow card.

The second half began with Cefn Coed taking the opportunity with the extra man and scoring within the first 3 minutes of the restart through Man of the Match Daniel Wickens who drove at the heart of the visitor's defence, crashing over to score taking three Rhymney tackles with him. Cefn Coed continued to turnover Rhymney ball through the ever impressive back row of Nathan Driscoll, Thomas Jehu and Chris Channon, this created chances for the Cefn Coed backline to probe for openings with Liam Crawley, Rhys Powell and Luke Griffiths looking dangerous with ball in hand. Cefn Coed were reduced to 14 men for the final 20 minutes of this encounter after one of their tackles was adjusted to be a tip tackle but even with one man less there were some outstanding defensive performances from Drew Evans, Kane Evans and Matthew Costigan who allowed Cefn Coed to hold out against a strong Rhymney outfit.

Rhymney notched up a late penalty to reduce the deficit to two points but this score came too late as Cefn Coed finished strongly. Special mention must go to the tackle of the day, a try saving tackle from Aled Morgan who produced a crunching hit only five metres from his own line to dislodge the ball and produce a turnover just when Rhymney were looking dangerous and starting to get a foot hold on the second half. From this knock-on Cefn Coed rallied and took control of the remainder of the second half closing out the game in style, maintaining possession for the final minutes of this pulsating fixture.

Cefn Coed Youth 6  Dowlais Youth 7

This fixture threw up a classic encounter between two very evenly matched local rivals, with superb defensive displays from both teams this was an extremely tight affair. Cefn Coed opened the scoring early in the first half after forcing Dowlais deep into their own twenty two and after a number of phasing Flyhalf James Regan sat back in the pocket to kick an excellent Drop Goal from 20 metres. Dowlais then came flooding back with their typical catch and drive style forcing Cefn Coed to defend their 5 metre line for a long period of time but after countless phases of play Dowlais' number eight Corey Waters crashed over for the try from close range for the visitors, this try was converted to allow the visitors to take a 3 - 7 lead. Cefn Coed then narrowed the gap with a penalty through Flyhalf James Regan after the referee had caught Dowlais offside in midfield approximately 40 metres from the posts.

The game was now on a knife edge with Dowlais having the edge up front but Cefn Coed looking dangerous with ball in hand amongst the back line, this was now becoming an extremely bruising encounter with a few explosive tackles from Nathan Driscoll, Chris Channon and the ever impressive Thomas Jehu. Cefn Coed came close to breaking the second half deadlock on a number of occasions through breaks from Kane Evans, Drew Evans and Liam Crawley but some last ditch tackling prevented the vital score to be made and allow Dowlais Youth to run out 6 - 7 winners.

Many thanks must go to match day sponsors REGAN CONSTRUCTION SERVICES for their very generous donation - THANK YOU.

Hirwaun Youth 10   Cefn Coed Youth    5

This was one of those fixtures where the score doesn't really reflect the actual game played, Cefn opened the scoring after dominating the first 15 minutes with a typical forwards try with a pick-up and crash over from Daniel Jones. This seemed to spur on the Cefn outfit who were placing Hirwaun Youth under enormous pressure but a loose ball fell to the home side who sprinted clear to score under the posts, they went on to add the conversion.

The second half saw Cefn denied two certain tries through two questionable decisions which allow Hirwaun Youth to throw the four Abercwmboi permit players forward at every opportunity and this resulted in a penalty to take Hirwaun 5 points clear with 15 minutes remaining on the clock. Cefn threw everything at Hirwaun including the kitchen sink. Cefn now dominating in the forwards resulting in at least three mauls rumbling down the field in excess of thirty metres only to be hauled down by the home side, from the resulting penalties Cefn squandered the opportunities which resulted in the final scores standing at 10 - 5.

There were notable performances from Thomas Jehu, Chris Channon, Liam Crawley and Drew Evans, the latter two players sharing the Man of the Match award.

Cefn Coed Youth    6    Mountain Ash RFC   15

This was a pulsating fixture with two excellent defences frustrating their opposition's attacks. Cefn controlled much of the opening twenty minutes by probing a stubborn Mount defence and playing fine rugby through Drew Evans, Liam Crawley and Flanker Thomas Jehu.

With all their possession Cefn managed to open the scoring through a penalty by James Regan after Mountain Ash had been caught offside at the contact area. Cefn then missed a long range penalty effort before Mount crossed the try line in the dying seconds of the half to end the first period 3 - 7 to the visitors.

The visitors increased their lead minutes into the second half after poor handling from Cefn Coed allowed Mount to regain possession from a Cefn scrum and cross for the day's second try.

With Cefn now chasing the game Mount began to defend for longer and longer as time ticked by but Cefn could only manage a second penalty from James Regan for all their efforts.

Late in the match Mountain Ash were reduced to 14 men as one of their forwards left the field for a head butt, this allowed Cefn to place Mount under enormous pressure for the final 10 minutes coming close through Daniel Wickens, Jay Segerson and Man of the Match Nathan Driscoll.

Gwernyfed Youth    7          Cefn Coed Youth    16

Gwernyfed place Cefn Coed under enormous pressure in the first half having played much of the period in their visitor's twenty two but a strong defensive performance from Cefn Coed allowed them to hold their hosts at bay. James Regan kicked well for field position which allowed Cefn Coed some respite in this massive defensive effort.

The second half was a totally different story with Cefn Coed doing all the running producing two well worked tries in the opening few minutes of the second half. Both tries came from good work in the backs with brothers Drew and Kane Evans opening up the Gwernyfed defence before allowing Liam Crawley to dive in at the corner for the try.

The second try came from an excellent run from fullback Matthew Costigan who put in the decisive pass to release Kane Evans to ground the ball for the second try in as many minutes. Cefn continued to pressure the home side and scored two penalties for all their efforts as Gwernyfed allowed the penalty count to creep over double figures as the half ticked by.

A late consolation try allowed the hosts to place their visitors under some pressure late on but Gwernyfed just left themselves too much to do which allowed Cefn to run out worthy winners in this first round Breconshire Cup fixture. The Cefn Coed squad wish Perry Lander and Aled Morgan speedy recoveries after a bad clash of head at the contact area saw both players leave the field of play in the second half and later saw them receive 17 and 25 stitches respectively.

Glynneath Youth     0          Cefn Coed Youth    8

This was a very hard fought and physical encounter between two well matched squads, Cefn opened the fixture much the stronger but a stubborn Glynneath defence kept them at bay for long periods of time.

After 15 minutes Cefn opened the scoring through a well struck penalty by James Regan after Glynneath had been penalized for handling the ball on the floor at the contact area.

The second half saw Glynneath place Cefn Coed under enormous pressure only for the young Cefn side to stand fast and hold out their hosts, with time ticking away Glynneath began to take a few risks in attack which allowed Cefn Coed to counterattack from deep inside their own half. Cefn spread the ball across field through Flyhalf James Regan, Centre Drew Evans and Flanker Nathan Driscoll which allowed Wing Liam Crawley to dive in at the corner for the match winning score.

Cefn Coed Youth 3 Builth Wells Youth 10

Builth Wells opened the scoring against the run of play after Cefn Coed had place the visitors under enormous pressure for the opening period of the game but a dropped pass allow Builth to hack the ball on for 40 metres before re-gathering and scoring under the posts, this try was coverted for the visitors to take a 0 - 7 lead. Cefn continued to place Builth under pressure for the remainder of the first half but only came away with 3 points, a single penalty for all their efforts with James Regan, Drew and brother Kane Evans coming close before the half time whistle.
The second half saw Builth open much the stronger for the first 10 minutes but then Cefn Coed Youth took over and attacked at every opportunity coming inches away from a try through Perry Lander, Lloyd Rees and Jay Segerson. Strong running from Drew and Kane opened up space for the impressive Matthew Costigan who broke the line on numerous occasions only for last ditch tackling to haul him down short of the try line. With time ticking away and with very little possession Builth took a late drop goal to seal the win 3 - 10.
