Cefn Coed RFC 37 Cilfynydd RFC 6
Last October, having gained their first win of the season at Cilfynydd, narrowly by 20 points to 24, Cefn were hoping to achieve the double.
For the first 15 minutes, most of the play was between the 22s with both sides testing each other. Then, from a scrum on the Cefn 22 metre line, Ryan Sullivan broke away, swiftly passing to Andrew Sullivan who got his three-quarters moving. Centres, Andrew Thomas and Jason Wilkes made tremendous ground, finished off by winger, Darren Gould. From a resulting scrum on the Cilfynydd line, Number 8, Gwlithyn Thomas gathered and went over for a try to open the scoring.
With Cefn again pressurising the Cilfynydd line, the visitors were caught with three players offside. Andrew Sullivan was successful with the resulting penalty to increase Cefn’s lead to 8 – 0.
With Cefn now looking sharp, following a kick ahead, Tim Phillips caught the ball and went over for a try in the corner.
In the final minutes of the half, Cefn were penalised allowing Cilfynydd outside half, Delme King, to slot over the penalty bringing the half time score to 13 – 3 to the home side.
Cefn were now playing with confidence, and showing good handling skills at both backs and forwards. From the first scrum of the second half, Ryan Sullivan gathered the ball and quickly went over for a try, successfully converted by Andrew Sullivan. From a Cefn error Cilfynydd were awarded a penalty and outside half King was again successful.
Then from a further penalty to Cefn, the ball was passed swiftly along the three quarters to wing, Darren Gould who crossed for Cefn’s fourth try, to put the score 25 – 6 to Cefn, and earning them a bonus point.
With a good kick ahead to the Cilfynydd line, captain, Arwel Thomas was able to gather the ball and go over for a try in the corner.
In the dying minutes, with Cefn putting more pressure on the Cilfynydd line, outside half, Andrew Sullivan gathered and went over for a try in the corner. He was also successful with the conversion.
This put the final score at 37 – 6, allowing the home side to gain the double over the visitors.
