Senghenydd, vying for promotion along with Barry, visited Cefn last Wednesday (May 5th) determined to put in a strong performance. Both their backs and forwards did this very well, eventually running in 8 tries with 3 converted.
Cefn’s strong running centre, Ross Sullivan, replied by crossing for 2 tries. Andrew Sullivan converted one and also kicked a penalty.
Canton 19 Cefn Coed 28
Saturday saw Cefn visiting Canton for the final league game of the season. Cefn’s final league position of 6th was already determined irrespective of the outcome of this game.
Andrew Sullivan opened the scoring for Cefn with a penalty kick. Canton replied to make the score three points apiece.
Scrum half, Ryan Sullivan, picked up from a scrum on the Canton 22 metre line and ran to go over for a try in the corner. Again, Canton replied with their centre going over for a try to make the score eight all.
Following a line-out cleanly taken by Geraint Monger the ball went to centre, Ross Sullivan, who ran in a try under the posts. Andrew Sullivan converted to make the score 8 – 15 in Cefn’s favour.
Canton replied with two penalties and a try by their wing to put the home side 19 – 15 in the lead at the interval.
With a good forward drive by the Cefn pack, the ball went out to wing Jason Wilkes who ran over for a try in the corner. This put Cefn back in the lead by one point.
Following a scrum on the Canton line, the forward drive by the Cefn pack took the ball from a Canton put in, enabling Alan Jones to pick up and drive over for Cefn’s 4th and bonus point try.
The game was sealed with a final drop goal from Jonathan Lewis. The referee, Hugh Copping of Newport, blew for time immediately after the kick putting Cefn winners by 19 – 28.
